Shreveport Is True Louisiana

28 April 2017

Louisiana rewards curious explorers who look beyond legendary New Orleans, and a visit to Shreveport is sure to delight. Easily reached, thanks to its regional airport (SHV), this historic city is home to the best of Louisiana’s countryside, culture and Southern comfort. It’s a great spot for conventions too, with the state’s second largest convention center right in town.

With its warm Southern climate, a chance to explore nature is one of the biggest draws to Shreveport. Cross Lake is a popular destination for fishing and boating, providing a hub for outdoor get-togethers. For landlubbers, a park located on the banks of the lake features tennis courts and a playground. For even more recreational activities, head to Cargill Park, which is a great place for a picnic. You can also take time to literally stop and smell the roses at the 118-acre rose center with 65 separate gardens. Animals abound in the area too. See wood ducks, waterfowl and butterflies in the wild when you visit the Red River National Wildlife Refuge. To meet some international critters, head to the alligator park and exotic zoo, where you can interact with miniature horses, kangaroos and lemurs at the petting zoo.

Shreveport is home to many types of playing fields, both indoor and outdoor. Take in a broad range of events, from rodeos and basketball games to comedy tours and concerts, at the nearby arena. Each spring, the air show draws “oohs and ahhs” from the audience. In the fall, visit the state fair, which has been a tradition for more than 110 years. Another popular annual tradition is the bowl game at the city’s open-air stadium, which always draws a big crowd. Want to get in on some of the nightlife action? There are several casinos in the areas, as well as one with the added excitement of a horse racing track.

Adding some fun, educational activities into the mix, Shreveport’s numerous museums and stores offer great options for nearly every interest. There’s a water works museum housed in a National Historic Landmark facility, a historical museum, a science center with nearly 300 interactive exhibits, a multicultural museum hosting numerous events and exhibits, and the Louisiana heritage center. There are also three art museums: one dedicated to artist Marlene Tseng Yu, a college art museum with a broad range of works, and an art gallery with a library and gardens. The town’s glass factory outlet is like an art museum where everything’s for sale, and for retail shopping, head to the outdoor outlet mall. You just might have to make several visits to experience it all.
