Not That Portland – This One’s in Texas!

30 May 2017

Sitting atop a 40-foot bluff overlooking Corpus Christi Bay, Portland, Texas, is a coastal gem. The city is surrounded by piers and beaches for miles, making it a fishing, swimming, boating, sunbathing and relaxing family-fun paradise. Getting around is easy thanks to the free Port Aransas Ferry that whisks you away to a city full of wildlife and nightlife.

Let’s take a tour starting in town and venturing outward.

Our first stop is Indian Point Pier, where you can enjoy free 24-hour access to angling and bird watching. Then, traveling a bit further in to Sunset Lake Park brings you to an outdoorsman's paradise with fishing plus a two-mile biking and hiking trail, including a boardwalk. As the name suggests, it’s great for sunset photo ops too. After you post your insta-worthy photo, grab your beach blankets and head for the white sands of North Beach on the Gulf of Mexico. Grab a bite or wet your whistle at one of the several restaurants that offer a scenic view. Continuing your journey out of Portland, Live Oak Park offers fun in the sun — or shade, thanks to approximately 90 oak trees. Family fun is easy here, with barbecue pits and an 18-hole disc golf course.

Want to take a day trip? You won’t be disappointed in what you find just 25 miles away. Bob Hall Pier extends more than 1,200 feet into the gulf and offers fishing around the clock. For an active beach visit, try surfing, wakeboarding or snorkeling at the surf park. For a down-to-earth beach experience, spend the day at Malaquite Beach and Pavilion, which includes a visitor center, gift shop, observation decks, bathhouses and a shaded picnic deck. Last but not least, check out Mustang Island State Park, where you can swim, snack and fish on a pristine barrier island.

On your way back to Portland, Corpus Christi is a must-visit city because it has a little something for everyone. Take in a performance at the playhouse, see aquatic creatures up close at the state aquarium or browse the exhibits at the USS Lexington Museum, the home of a World War II Essex Class aircraft carrier. Explore more of the region’s past at the science and history museum, with historic shipwrecks and decorative art from area families. You can catch the Double-A Corpus Christi baseball team or cheer on the greyhounds from the fully enclosed, air-conditioned grandstand at the dog track.

Few things make for a better night’s sleep than fresh air and sunshine, and Country Inn & Suites By Carlson,® Portland, TX, is a comfortable place for getting your well-earned rest. Before you turn in for the night, take a refreshing swim in the outdoor pool while enjoying the bay breeze. And with the complimentary Be Our Guest Breakfast, you can quickly start another day of fun in the sun after filling up on favorites like waffles, hot and cold cereals, and eggs. With the day’s most important meal out of the way, the biggest decision you’ll have to make is which destination to explore next.
