Explore history and the outdoors in Dahlgren VA

28 October 2016

Outdoor fun and American history abound along the shores of the Potomac River in northeastern Virginia.

Just up the river is Caledon State Park, known for its old-growth forests and nesting American bald eagles. Trails crisscross through marshes and forests, with occasional river overlooks.

Downriver is the old Virginia resort town of Colonial Beach, home to the second longest public beach in the state. The birthplaces of George Washington and James Monroe are nearby.

If you can’t get enough history, cross the Potomac River into Maryland and explore a lesser-known capital, St. Mary’s City. The original Maryland statehouse and settlers homes have been reconstructed, offering a glimpse of colonial life.

The Country Inn & Suites By Carlson, Dahlgren VA is the best place to begin your adventure. Whatever you decide to do, you’ll want to make sure you eat a hearty breakfast. The buffet menu at Be Our Guest Breakfast includes made-to-order waffles, eggs, cereal, pastries and yogurt.

After a day outdoors, chill with a cup of fresh coffee or hot tea and a chocolate chip cookie. Grab a book from our lending library and relax by the fireplace in our living-room-like lobby.
