Monday, July 22, 2013
Can’t decide where to take your next vacation? How about a road trip to three cities in America’s Heartland? From Chicago to Cincinnati to Indianapolis, this road trip itinerary will take you and your family or friends on a journey you’ll remember for years to come.
Start your adventure through the Heart of America in the Windy City. Visit one of the city’s many popular museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, which houses one of the largest Monet collections in the world, and the Field Museum, a museum of natural history that includes one of the most complete T-Rex skeletons.
If you’re visiting while the weather is warm, make time to enjoy Millennium Park. Located in the middle of the city, the park offers visitors flowers, architecture and even free outdoor concerts. For the visitors who enjoy shopping during vacation, the Magnificent Mile is the place to go. Home to some of the most expensive shopping in the Midwest, this shopping district features top labels and designers and runs down Michigan Avenue from Oak Street to the Chicago River. The Streeterville shopping district is also located just a few blocks away and offers more affordable shopping. After a long day of exploring this exciting city, rest your head at one of our many Chicago-area hotels, including the convenient Country Inn & Suites By Carlson, Elk Grove Village at I-290 and Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Roselle.
Hit the road for a short drive southwest to Indianapolis, Indiana. This Heartland city has much to offer any visitor. Drop off your bags at our Indianapolis Airport South or Greenfield hotels and enjoy a workout in the fitness center or a dip in the hotel pool before you start exploring the city.
A trip to Indianapolis isn’t complete without a visit to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500. As the largest spectator sporting facility in the world, the speedway will have you marveling at its sheer size. Adventurous visitors can even take a drive on the track, but be prepared to spend some money for the experience! If NASCAR isn’t your sport of choice, stop by Victory Field to catch a Minor League Baseball game with the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Triple-A team, the Indianapolis Indians. Foodies shouldn’t miss some of Indianapolis’ great eats, including Café Patachou, a quaint and chic café in downtown, and Bazbeaux Pizza, locally known as the city’s best pizza.
The final stop on your Heart of America road trip is the city of Cincinnati, located just a few hours southwest of Indianapolis. Start your day with a delicious, hot breakfast at one of our area hotels and grab a cup of coffee or a freshly baked cookie to go! Children and adults alike will have a great time visiting the more than 3,500 species of animals and plants at the Cincinnati Zoo and exploring the variety of plant life at the Krohn Conservatory.
Stop by Hyde Park Square to enjoy a variety of shops, restaurants and art galleries, or visit the outlet and retail stores at Forest Fair Village. Wrap up your day in the city with dinner at Primavista, an Italian restaurant that offers guests a stunning view of the Cincinnati skyline and the Ohio River.
With so many great attractions to visit in each of these cities, you’ll have trouble figuring out where to start. Download our printer-friendly version of the Heart of America itinerary and start planning your own road trip!
